Attention span has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds today.
In the digital world, most people struggle with attention deficit and the inability to appreciate the present. So, I've been trying to practice meditation, mindfulness, and other techniques. Recently, I came across a process known as 5-4-3-2-1, which is an excellent technique for anyone struggling with attention deficit like me.
It's a simple 5 steps that help calm building emotions by "distracting" ALL of your senses with things in the present moment.
Dwelling on the past, no matter how much, will never change it; and dreaming about the future will not achieve you anything (except discontentment.) Unless we put those dreams into action in the present.
Here are the steps!
5: Acknowledge 5 things around us.
This could be anything: a window, a piece of furniture, a family member, or a friend. ( not digitally). Take note of what YOU love in Each item or person.
4: Touch 4 things around you.
Your hair, a pillow, a pet, a friend, etc.
3: Notice 3 sounds you hear around you.
A clock, a bird, etc. (not digital song or podcast)
2: Notice 2 things you can smell.
Soaps, Nature, Fabric. (Make sure you showered before this practice) 😱🤢
1: Notice a taste.
Gum, mints, maybe a hint of what you had for lunch.
Practicing this will help you in many aspects of life. After all, the past and future are determined by the present.
